Forget about the midi-length hem trend! Shorter-than-short shorts and micro-minis are still the sexiest look to rock when the weather heats up. Killer legs will seal the deal, but you hate going to the salon and getting a wax because it’s painful. Did you give up shaving years ago because the hair just grows back too fast and you never really got the smoothest results that you want? No worries! I have an idea for you that’s practically painless, inexpensive, and can be done in the privacy of your own home.

The formula:

Waxing with less flinching. Sugar waxing is a form of hair removal that removes the entire hair from the hair follicle, unlike shaving, which bluntly cuts the hair at the surface, leaving unsightly ingrown hairs left behind. Because the entire hair is removed, skin is left extremely smooth without the (excruciating) pain of regular waxing typically done in salons (since the sugar wax only sticks to the hair, not your skin). You won’t believe it until you try it and I did! The results were amazing so I had to share!

Why pay so much to get a wax done at a salon if you can do it yourself at home with three simple ingredients? All you’ll need to make your own sugar wax at home is:

Cup of water
1/4 cup of Apple Cider vinegar
4 tablespoons of sugar (brown or white both work great).

The Preparation:

Heat it up. Take a medium-sized pot and pour in your mixture, placing it on medium-to-high heat.

Mix your mix. Once your mixture starts to boil, stir with a wooden spoon until bubbles disappear and all of the ingredients have bonded. This usually takes 5-8 minutes. You will be able to tell if everything has bonded if you let the wax drip from the spoon into the pot and you can’t spot any chunks of sugar; should end up with an even, smooth consistency. Pour into a glass jar.

Amplify your base. While you’re in the shower, use a body scrub on your legs to exfoliate your skin and get rid of dead skin cells for a super-smooth finish. One to try: The Body Shop’s Spa Fit Smoothing Refining Body Scrub, $22.

Prime your skin. Put hair conditioner on your legs and leave it there for five minutes to soften the hair on your legs. DIY recipe we’re obsessed with: Stir a mixture of two parts Aloe vera gel and one part extra virgin olive oil and spread mixture onto skin in the direction of your natural hair growth. But be sure to use a slip resistance mat in the shower because this mixture can get pretty slippery.

The Application:

Smooth it on. To apply the wax, use a popsicle stick and dip it in the wax. Apply the wax to your legs (or wherever you wish to be smooth) in the opposite direction of hair growth (different from regular waxing, which is typically applied in the direction of hair growth)

Rip it out. Take your paper sheets or cotton material and smooth it down on top of the wax and smooth it out. Get a firm grip on it and rip it off in the opposite direction of your hair growth. It’s that simple!

Hydrate and heal. Rinse and dry off your legs. Put on a moisturizing body oil like the Sugar Body Oil by Fresh, $45. Then follow with a moisturizing body lotion/butter. One we love: Burt’s Bees’ Honey & Shea Body Butter, $13.
